Question from Andrea: My 8 year old son is battling dyslexia - TopicsExpress

Question from Andrea: My 8 year old son is battling dyslexia and as I think dyscalculia as well. Ever since he started school he had to face the fact not being able to succeed in academical areas. He is a nice little boy, very careful with making friends but on the other hand can ignore people if for what ever reason he cant connect. We are from Germany but living in New Zealand since four years. His German is still where it should be at his age and although it took him much longer than other children to catch up with the English I think he is doing fine now in his second language. What I struggle the most with is not to know how to help him best. All those programs and special tutoring available are basically not affordable and schools here in NZ are not very good at catering for those students with learning difficulties. I even had to learn that teachers and schools are dont even know what it all is about and their only argument is that there is no funding for those children available. Very sad and heart braking, I mean humans can fly to the moon but cant help their biggest resource for the future. Has anyone experience in supporting a child who is dyslexic and suffers from dyscalculia as well? Any suggestions are most welcome, thank you.
