Question from USMLEHelp Step 1 Anatomy: What are the lobes of the liver? - The liver is functionally divided into two lobes, right & left. The external division is marked on the front of the liver by the falciform ligament, which joins the coronary ligament at the superior margin of the liver. The right lobe is separated from the other lobes by the gallbladder fossa & the fossa for the inferior vena cava on the visceral surface of the liver. The left lobe includes the caudate & quadrate lobes. It is separated from these two lobes by the attachment of the ligamentum teres, & the fissures for the ligamentum teres & the ligamentum venosum. The caudate lobe lies between the fissure for the ligamentum venosum & the fossa for the inferior vena cava. The quadrate lobe is partly covered by the gallbladder in normal patients; anatomically, it lies between the fissure for the ligamentum teres & the gallbladder fossa.
