Question number 2! A student asks: Q: What formula do we use in Mizong? Are things like always kcik more than once, never more than three times formula? What about Z-pattern striking? What formula should students learn? A: You will hear many things while studying Mizong, but most are not strictly formula. The formula you should apply yourself to, up to level 2 (blue sash), are the 3 physical formula (Small fort, cutting butterflies, nine palace palm) and the three verbal formula (never assume, anything is possible, mastery of the first stroke). You should also familiarise yourself with the three laws of battle (at first sight of the enemy, do nothing; gather reconnaissance; act, never bluff). The others to which you refer are not strict formula, as they presume too much about Mizong. Mizong is first and foremost a thought process, and as such many comments on physicality are not widely applicable, as everyone has a different body. Kicking structures, for example, are described with the optimal efficiency of stretch kicking in mind. These are not formula, so much as statements about effectiveness should you use a particular set of skills. But not everyone can stretch kick. Everyone, on the other hand, can develop nine palace palm, even if it looks different between practitioners. Finally, and always returning to the Buddhist core of our system, at its highest attainment Mizongs principles and formulae should disappear before the emptiness of an open, clear mind. Cross reference widely and understand the formulae, but be not held down by them if your clarity and experience can push beyond. Emituofo, Nick
