Question of Inquiry: Is euthanasia an act that alleviates pain? - TopicsExpress

Question of Inquiry: Is euthanasia an act that alleviates pain? Is euthanasia an act of mercy? Consider the following argument: It is as follows: 1. An act of alleviation entails the sensation a conscious being/sentient being is capable of experiencing after relief from pain has been attained. 2. Thus, if euthanasia is an act of alleviation, then it entails a conscious being/sentient being able to experience the sensation that follows relief from pain/suffering. 3. Since euthanasia is an act that entails the use of a lethal injection (and subsequently it causes a patient to loose consciousness)it follows that a conscious being/sentient being cannot experience the sensation that follows relief from pain/suffering. (Moreover the use of the lethal injection damages the vegetative function of a patient and subsequently he/she is subject to aphixiation; the lethal injection also induces a coma, paralysis, cardiac arrest, and death.) 4. Euthanasia is not an act that alleviates pain/suffering. 5. If euthanasia is not an act that alleviates pain/suffering, then it is not an act of mercy. 6. Therefore euthanasia is not an act of mercy.
