Question(s) to my musician friends. I have only heard of BMI - TopicsExpress

Question(s) to my musician friends. I have only heard of BMI and ASCAP. Are there other organizations out there that collect royalties? I have two questions related to this. 1. I am a composer and Ive been thinking of registering music with one of these two agencies. I dont need them to file my own copyright paper work but thought it would be helpful when I try to mass distribute music. I could be wrong. Or, is it better to handle things on your own. I am not familiar with music publication and distribution as I mostly perform live, and usually standards. But I thought it would be good to have these agencies collect royalties for me rather than try to knock on peoples doors myself (assuming thats how it works). 2. If I decide to register my music with one of these agencies which is better. BMI is free. Sounds like a good deal. 3. I am considering joining AFM, or other union, to procure union work. In looking into this organization it appears that you need to belong to a chapter (probably best to be in the region where you expect to get the most work). However, I called my local chapter and was informed that you may have to pay extra fees to perform in other locals. They couldnt quote a fee, as its venue and work specific. Although I live in NJ I expect to be working in NYC, Philly and DC areas regularly in the next year. Does anyone out there have experience with this and know what to expect?
