Questions about FeLV testing. Im new to this group. I founded Emerald Coast Animal Allies ecaaFL.org in Pensacola, FL. We primarily rescue cats through trap/neuter/return. Any kittens or strays we encounter we try to find homes for. We test adoptables for FeLV. We dont test or worry about FIV. We have FIV+ cats living with FIV-. Recently weve had a couple of healthy cats test positive for FeLV. Im getting conflicting information about the tests. Weve done SNAP tests and IFA blood serum tests. 2 vets have told me we should have done the IFA using bone marrow instead of blood. Since the PCR test looks for DNA in the blood and the SNAP and IFA test the blood there is no point doing a PCR test at this point. One cat, Frisco, tested positive on two SNAP tests a month apart, negative on the IFA. Vet says hes not likely to revert to negative. Hes about a year old. We did the two SNAP tests close together time wise because we got a false FeLV positive on another cat. His sister, Floffie, tested positive on SNAP and IFA blood serum tests. Were told the IFA means its in her bone marrow and she definitely wont revert to negative. What is the value of the PCR test? Should we do IFA using bone marrow? Is there a better test? Is Floffie most likely to not going to beat FeLV? Does Frisco have a chance? Were keeping them separate, do we need to? We want to give Frisco any chance we can. Thanks for input!
