Questions have been raised over money claimed by Labour peers in the House of Lords following revelations that Scottish members racked up costs of more than £2million. According to a report in the Sunday Post newspaper the 2013-14 total cost of Scottish members of the House of Lords has risen to £2,177,081 - an increase of £136,628 on the previous year. Further data revealed that six Labour Lords - Baroness Adams of Craigielea, Lord Kirkhill, Lord Elder, Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill, Lord Howie of Troon and Lord Leitch - collected over £250,000 despite speaking in no debates and never asking a question. “These latest figures which reveal the true cost of the House of Lords are a damning indictment of democracy in the UK in 2014,” said James Dornan, SNP MSP for Glasgow Cathcart. “This system of inherited privilege and unelected power is bad enough and it is totally reprehensible that the total cost of Scottish Lords has risen to £2,177,081. “To make matters worse; in the last financial year six lazy Labour Lords claiming to represent Scotland who have never spoken or asked a question in the House of Lords have still cost the taxpayer over £250,000. “It is insulting to the hard working families across Scotland struggling to make ends meet that these Lords are living a lavish lifestyle at their expense and can pick up money for simply turning up at the House of Lords to vote.” According to the Labour Lords website they are there to hold the Conservative-LibDem Coalition to account and address issues affecting the lives of people both in the UK and around the world. “Labour Lords bizarrely try and claim some credibility because they know how to run a Twitter account and make bold claims on their website, but the fact is that six Scottish Labour Lords have not done a stroke of work at Westminster whilst claiming nearly quarter of a million pounds in expenses in the most recent financial year,” said Mr Dornan. “The hypocrisy of the Westminster parties is astounding; with hollow words they criticise the Lords their Lords are running up higher expenses bills than ever.” https://acnmedia.uberflip/i/425075
