Quick Nebula Review: Steinberg RND Portico 5033 EQ plugin VS. Acustica-Audios Nebula 3 This is a mostly unscientific testing of the Steinberg RND Portico 5033 EQ plugin VS. Acustica-Audios Nebula 3 Pro using AlexBs Modern White EQ program. This really just a PSA for those who have yet to try Nebula (or the Portico, for that matter.) I dont have a Portico hardware unit to also judge, so I defaulted to the SOS review. (They found that the plugin really emulates the hardware closely.) After doing my best to level match and settings match on some vocal tracks, I found that the Steinberg plugin also really sounds very close to Nebula, despite it being much more ram, processor and insert instance (one per band) intensive. The Steinberg plugin seems very slightly more refined sounding in its smoothness to me, but also seems to have a little less mid punch and less roundness in the lower mids than Nebula...but its very close. You can listen for yourself below. Steinberg & RND have done a great job with the Portico; seems really worth having and I believe it captures that Neve sound. (And it certainly took on Nebula.) And I think Nebulas amazing hardware emulation and AlexBs careful sampling and electronics engineering expertise have done fantastically as usual and also capture the Neve vibe. Pricewise: Steinberg Portico 5033: $250 VS. Nebula 3 Pro: $200 AlexBs Modern White EQ: $25 (But huge savings because other programs for Nebula run at a similar price once you have Nebula Pro) Below are screengrabs of the Portico settings and the 5 Nebula instances needed to match it. I could only upload one wav file here, so I combod the 2 samples into one 24/44.1 mono wav file (its a single, mono vocal, uncleaned and unprocessed save for the EQs.) The Portico plays first, repeats, then the Nebula does the same. Didnt do any deep spectral or harmonic analysis of the files. If that bugs you, youre completely free to do one yourself. If youd like to complain, youre completely free to bite it. Enjoy.
