Quick note to gym users with regards to the January rush: FAO: Current users I understand January is a frustrating time for gym regulars’. Equipment thats normally easily accessible is generally not. Theres queues for treadmills (seriously) and not much floor space to be had. Obviously, thats going to get in the way of your planned sessions. However, its not their fault. By they, of course, Im referring to the new gym users who will inevitably start in January. Theyre no different to you. You too started training once upon a time. You once walked into a gym not entirely sure of what to do before. You want to improve your health and physique, the same way they do. So instead of snarling and being stand-offish in the hope theyll all leave after a month, how about offering advice? If you see someone looking confused, how about asking if they need a hand? In my opinion, a good gym is a friendly gym. One in which no one feels intimidated, where people arent afraid of failing or making mistakes. FOA: New gym users You have to understand a few things before you enter the gym. Those ‘scary’ people don’t hate you and they aren’t staring at you. They’re simply in the zone. They’re doing what you should aspire to do… Training with aggression and intensity for the sake of physical and mental development. If you ask them a question or for some help, 99 times out of 100 they’ll snap out of it, help you out politely and then snap back into the mental state they need to be in to train. Similarly, the pretty boys and girls aren’t posing (okay, some are…and, yes, they should be shot), they’re checking their form and looking for strengths and weaknesses in their physique. What you have to understand is that the people who you perceive to have the best physiques (or even the most disgusting…bodybuilding ain’t for everyone, after all) are the most self-critical people in the gym. They analyse their body and critique it more negatively than the most overweight and self-loathing person you could ever imagine. Don’t hold it against them, it’s an obsession and it’s their passion - let ‘em stare at themselves in the mirror. Lastly, the staff are there to help you. Ask them questions, ask for help, ask them to write you a program. If youre really struggling or think you need extra help, hire a trainer. (Just make sure you do your research and put a lot of thought into it before you do.) Also, try not to walk about with your head down or staring at the clock, counting down the seconds until you can leave. Learn to embrace exercise and aim to enjoy it the process. The bottom line is this: Theres no reason for negative sentiments from or towards anyone in the gym. Were all there for the same reason, and thats to improve. Lets try to help each other do so by making the training environment friendly, goal-orientated, helpful and supportive.
