Quick update to summarize the bitter cold and snow over the next - TopicsExpress

Quick update to summarize the bitter cold and snow over the next 7-days: A series of storms is getting ready to develop and ride into downstate areas, producing upwards of a foot of snow from southeast Missouri, into southern Illinois and southern Indiana, with a major ice storm just sout of there across Arkansas into western Kentucky where the cold air will be shallower. This storm, however; will not affect us locally too much with just a few passing flurries possible Thursday night into Friday. This allows a moderated brand of arctic air to fill in Friday and Saturday since there is not yet snow on the ground here. A storm system will develop and move northward on Sunday into Monday, spreading a wide swath of snow across the area, with early indications of a general 3-5 amount (subject to adjustments). This is when the arctic air will not moderate as lows Monday night may drop to near zero, with highs struggling to crack 10 Tuesday. Wind chills of -10 to as low as -25 will be possible Tuesday night into Wednesday. A slight moderation expected late next week in advance of yet another storm system. This is a very cold, active pattern which shows no signs of backing off. In fact, looking at the whole suite of models for the next 2 months shows this could be a regular thing. Its already running nearly 12 degrees colder than last December so predications of a cold winter appear to be coming true. We havent had much snow yet, but that will also change as the arctic air is able to punch further south. As for any lake-effect snow, we wont even get into that at this point, but its something to watch with this type of cold.
