Quickly - Words for Today 1) onomatope An imitative word; an onomatopoetic word. A recent praiseworthy study of onomatopes in the Japanese language has been made by Mr. Aston, who defines an onomatope as the artistic representation of an inarticulate sound or noise by means of an articulate sound. A word formed to resemble the sound made by the things signified. This one above is a bit perplexing... onomatope as its says like to imitate. and they used onomatopoetic as an example. Yet, I looked it up, and it is not a regular word in the dictionary... more used in a different situation such as onomatopoetic... and so forth to describe something imitative... 2) scurvy MEANING: adjective: Mean or contemptible. noun: A disease caused by vitamin C deficiency, characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, bleeding under the skin, and weakness. ETYMOLOGY: From Old English scurf, probably from Old Norse. Ultimately from the Indo-European root sker- (cut), which also gave us decorticate, excoriate, hardscrabble, incarnadine, scrobiculate, and caruncle. Earliest documented use: 1529. USAGE: “When a scurvy band of outlaws rides up, Jake, to his surprise and certainly theirs, eliminates them in short order.” Peter Rainer; Daniel Craig Stars in Cowboys & Aliens; The Christian Science Monitor (Boston, Massachusetts); Jul 29, 2011. Of course most of us know the meaning of scurvy especially in the medical realm. A disease caused by lack of Vitiman C deficient, which can result in weakness, bleeding gums, even bleeding under the skin, kind of like being very easily bruised... we dont see much of this in our nation because we have sunshine for one, plus our foods (fruits such as oranges) provide us with the sunshine vitamin and many of us take a supplement daily. Many of our foods are fortified with this vitamin as well as others. I also had known that it could mean contemptible, mean, vicious... and so forth.... and for the Quote of the Day or Thought for the day - A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Sometimes you cant see yourself clearly until you see yourself through the eyes of others. -Ellen DeGeneres, comedian, TV host, actor, and writer (b. 26 Jan 1958) I feel that is quite a profound statement. So often our view of our own selves, can be very different that through the eyes of others. Plus that does not have to be meant we are viewed as lesser but more rather I think others tend to see the great pieces of us, whereas when we see ourselves we tend to look for all the imperfections. Why do you think all of our makeup, hair, stylists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons... get so rich? Because of the view we see in the mirror, and often being not of the liking of what we see.... thus ALL of that paint we place on our faces, the coloring of our hair, even the drastic measures of plastic surgery, to change the way we look because we are not happy with it. Yet, other people also are more of the tendency to see into the depths of us, way under the skin, and find our spirit, our goodness, our wit, and all of the wonderful things that exist that are far deeper than flesh. We, are our hardest critics most of the time.
