Quite a few people, including Claire Morton, have remarked on the little ‘trees’ found washed up on Porth beach. Some have asked if they are fossilized wood or perhaps plastic. Michelle Costello creates works of art from the ones she has collected. Bill Brain tells me the fishermen call this ladythorn (or a less polite term when their nets get caught up in it). Phil Ellery has done some research into this and thinks they are a soft coral found in Cornish waters. He writes: “After a bit of help on Instagram from @captain_lightfoot, and some researching on the net, the piece of coral I found is known as a broad sea fan or pink sea fan (Eunicella verrucosa) it is a species of Gorgonian soft coral in the Gorgoniidae family.” Im assuming all the pictures here show the same species but if not please let me know!
