Quite right. Im more than suspicious of patriotism: I hate it. Its impossible to reconcile with a belief in the equality of humankind; how, indeed, can it be distinguished from racism? But I dont see what any of that has to do with political independence or with self-rule. The conflation of these two very different meanings of nationalism is a favourite connivance (when its deliberate; when its not, its just ignorance) of many in the No camp. Connolly hasnt in fact done this here - although he doesnt observe the distinction, either - but its no surprise that the press is doing the conflating for him.
