Quite some time ago, Lynn Maudlin, who knew of Angelee Sailer Andersons and my love for the Lord Peter Wimsey stories by Dorothy Sayers and especially the line that Harriet Vane tells Lord Peter, If I ever do marry you, Peter, it will be for the pleasure of hearing you talk piffle, since that is a kind of standard mode of conversation around our house, created the Lord Peters Piffle Page and made administrators of her, Angelee and me (which is sort of confusing because it is typically unclear which of the three of us is posting under the title of administrator, so I typically typed Stanley here in my admin posts to indicate such. It had a bit of activity for some time, but as such things go, has tended to fade out. One of the problems is that a great percentage of my regular Stanley Anderson posts could easily fall into that pages category, but I want them to appear on my own newsfeed. So the page gets neglected more than it should. In any case, I had a notification (being one of the three admins) that there were new views to the page. So I went there to take a quick (so I thought) glance at the page after many months of neglect, and found lots of stuff I had completely forgotten about. I decided to copy and paste at least one here (and may indeed follow up with replies of copy-and-pastes of a couple others if I have time), just because they are fun (from my rather distorted piffle-induced state at least). This one in particular tickled me again. And I especially like the settling of Angelees last comment (so far anyway) to the thread. So here it is, including various peoples replies (I hope they dont mind having their comments copied and pasted here): ------------------------------ Several new items have recently been discovered in the ever-expanding catalog of particle physics. To the list that already contains the familiar protons, neutrons, electrons, photons, mesons, bosons, muons, and on-and-ons, some of the newly discovered particles are listed below: The heavy basketball particle with its radical ricocheting back-and-forth motion across the court was found to have a companion that acts as the exchange particle responsible for this activity that physicists have called the “gameon.” In the related field of baseball, the corresponding momentum-altering exchange particle has been called the baton, and because it imparts a spin 1/2 property, this action is called “baton twirling”. The mysterious “skeptic’s” particle discovered jointly by Uri Geller and the Russian President Vladimir Putin has been named in honor of its discoverers as “Uri-Putin-meon.” In liquid helium Bose–Einstein condensates a particle discovered in the supercool facility has been called the “righton.” ----------------------------- Are there any other new particles in the news that I may have missed that anyone can add to this list? [replies] Stanley Anderson: Oh! I forgot to mention the surrealist dual heavy particles discovered in tandem by comparing Einsteins relativistic time-dialation with a country twang using a melting clock for recording the half-life of the two particles. They have been called the Dali-Parton. Steve Schaper: Are they the particles which impart volume? Stanley Anderson: You mean the companion to the Higgs Boson that imparts mass through the Higgs field? Thats certainly the conjecture, but the debate raging right now through physics halls across the country is whether or not they are virtual particles. The question everyone is asking is Are they real? Steve Schaper: I meant the Dali-Parton. Stanley Anderson: Yes, obviously. They are part of the Salvadorian field, collectively known as the Sav-ons. Angelee Sailer Anderson And then there are those particles that hit older folks bladders in the middle of the night -- peons. Personally I prefer he-ons and she-ons.
