Quitting smoking beneficial for lung disease patients. This study is further evidence of the benefits of quitting, even for people who have a smoking-related illness. Quitting smoking is beneficial for patients with lung disease, according to Danish researchers from Copenhagen University Hospital. Their study, showed that the risk of being admitted to hospital with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was reduced significantly when patients gave up smoking. However, cutting down did not seem to help. The researchers studied nearly 20,000 people over a 14-year period. During this time, 1,260 patients were admitted to hospital with COPD. Those who gave up smoking were half as likely as those who continued smoking to need hospital admission, but cutting down did not make any difference. A popular excuse for not given up smoking is that the damage has already been done. However, this study is further evidence of the benefits of quitting, even for people who have a smoking-related illness. It also shows that cutting down does not minimise the risks to smokers. This is probably due to ‘compensation’ – the term experts use to describe the fact that if you are addicted you need a certain amount of nicotine to satisfy your cravings. If you normally smoke 20 a day, and you cut down to 10 a day, you will probably smoke your cigarettes longer and deeper to get your nicotine ‘fix’. So, although you smoke fewer cigarettes, you are actually inhaling as much nicotine and tar as if you hadn’t cut down at all What do you think? bit.ly/12bcd9i
