Qunut Against Usaiyya “The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) sent a Sariya (army unit) consisting of men called Al-Qurra, and all of them were martyred. I had never seen the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) so sad over anything as he was over them. So he said Qunut for one month in the Fajr prayer, asking for Allah’s Wrath upon the tribe of Usaiyya and he used to say, ‘The people of Usaiyya have disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.’” [Sahih Bukhari] Abu Bara came to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) in Madina and asked him to dispatch some of the Sahabah to the people of Najd to call them to Islam. “I expect them to accept (Islam)” he said. “I am afraid that the people of Najd will kill them” said the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). But Abu Bara said that he would protect them. So the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) sent seventy of the Sahabah who were the best and most learned in the Quran and jurisprudence to Najd. [The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri] When they arrived at Ma’una Well which was situated between Bani Amir, Harrah and Bani Saleem they set up camp. They sent the message of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) with Haram bin Milhan to Amir bin At-Tufail inviting him to Islam. Amir did not heed the message, rather ordered a man to spear Haram in the back. When the spear penetrated Haram’s body, he saw the blood and said, “Allahu Akbar. By the Lord of Al-Kabah I have won!” [The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri] Then Amir called out Bani Amir to fight the rest. Bani Amir refused, saying that the Muslims were under the protection of Abu Bara. Amir then turned to Bani Saleem. The people of Usaiyyah, Ri’al and Dhakwan, who were folks of Bani Saleem responded to his call. The Companions of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) were encompassed by idolators. They kept on fighting till they were all killed except for one Sahabi who was carried wounded from among the dead. [The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri] Two of this group of seventy had been entrusted with the animals of the Muslims and were far away when this incident took place. When they saw birds circling in the air over the battleground they rushed to join the Muslims. One of these two was martyred but the other, Amr bin Omaiyah (radi Allahu anhu), was captured. [The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri] Returning to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), Amr bin Omaiyah (radi Allahu anhu) conveyed the news of this painful disaster in which seventy of the best believers had been murdered. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) was so deeply moved by this tragedy that he used to invoke Allah’s Wrath against those people and tribes who killed his Companions. For thirty days the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) supplicated Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) against those who killed his Companions at Ma’una Well. Every Fajr Salat he would pray for Allah’s Wrath to descend on Ri’l, Dhakwan, Lihyan and Usaiyyah. Thereafter, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) revealed to the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) on behalf of the martyred, “Inform our folk that we have encountered our Lord and He is satisfied with us and we are satisfied with Him.” [The Sealed Nectar by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri]
