Quota system in SA sport. I read a couple of comments wrt the enforcing of transformation in sport, giving all a fair chance to represent our national team. Whichever way you try and work it out you come to a dead end. Someone is going to lose out to some form of racism. What and who is black? Is coloured black? How do you even determine coloured? The pencil test in the hair? What about a shaven head? Maybe we should go back to where it all started. As the late Hassan Howa said, “no normal sport in an abnormal society”. Is our society normal?. NO. I propose the following: • Let select Black, White, Indian and Coloured teams in all sporting codes and let them battle it out on the sporting fields and then pick a team purely on results. Surely if the Whites win at soccer then they should be proportionately represented in soccer. I recall watching soccer at William Herbert under floodlights and watched amazing players of colour doing their thing eg. Danny Brink of Cape FA and Siva Pillay of Northern Natal. Then there was a biggish built guy for Stellenbosch who banged a ball like the great Portuguese Eusebio did. After that out of our hometown Aurora blossomed. I think of George Samuels and school friend Claire Manual and Mark Van Der Byl gracing the goals at St Raphael’s. • We also had the Van Graans, the Pooles and the la Vitas hitting cricket balls broken on matting wickets. • And what about the roar of the crowd from City Park when Progress takes on Persies. Not forgetting Ossie Jacobs and Universals, and the Edeams. What must we still develop into? We were more than enough in the sixties and seventies already. By getting back to my original proposal, yes we are going back, yes it may sound stupid, yes there are lots of logistics which most probably does not make this viable but........what has changed over the past 20years? I sit in many meetings with Consultants numbering more than 30 and guess what? I am the only BLACK present. Something is not right. Although i am blessed i sometimes even feel dirty. What about my brothers and sisters out there. The imbalance in the workplace is even worse than on the sports fields. Just reading through this makes me at least think like “a Homeland concept” run in a proper GODLY manner will not be so bad after all. And each homeland can be open to all who is willing to subject themselves to the rule of that area. And now i wait for a backlash from who ever. Why do i want the ALL BLACKS to win when i am South African?
