Quote Hi, welcome to Askmelah. I am a locally born Singaporean and prefer to be known as Askmelah. I prefer to stay anonymous as you will see in this website that I am pretty critical of the current batch of Government and they are quite well known for not too kind to those who holds opposing views [updated Oct2014: the latest victim Gintai]. I find them overpaid, aloof, elitist and extravagant. I do not believe the recent batches of politicians are sincere in ruling this country, it is more like a high paying job to many of them, unlike the early batches of politicians prior to the millennium who demonstrated sacrifice, commitment and humility. “Dr Goh Keng Swee told me that I had advance in my career not because I was cleverer than others, but because I was in the right place at the right time. In like vein, he told me that Singapore achieved econcmic progress not because we are clever but that others were more stupid.” – Ngiam Tong Dow in “A Mandarin and the Making of Public Policy: Reflections” The greatness of Singapore is not just about an effective Government, it also comprises of hardworking (and some may say naive and kind) people, the blessing of a good geographical location, the kindness of its neighbours, a good system left by the British empire (and a great man known as Sir Stamford Raffles) and a great Singapore son Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his lieutenants with their grit and vision in bringing the country from third world to first world economically within 30 years. Unfortunately, we begin to slip in the past few years. The rich multi-culture and unique Nonya culture is one fine example which give us richness in our great food unparalleled in this part of the word. Sadly as we develop, we are also losing many of our precious memories, cultures (such as dialects, diversity, history) and traditional Asian values (such as filial piety, loyalty, humility and respect elders). It is my hope that this page will bring together Singaporeans and foreigners alike who love this tiny beautiful country together, search for information and articles relating to Singapore, that is a little contribution I can give back to the society. If anyone is keen to help start a discussion forum in Askmelah to bring Singaporeans together, pls drop me a mail. Unquote
