Quote from David Attenborough from Life in the Undergrowth (made 8 years ago): If we and the rest of the backboned animals were to disappear overnight, the rest of the world would get on pretty well. But if they [insects/pollinators] were to disappear, the lands ecosystems would collapse. The soil would lose its fertility. Many of the plants would no longer be pollinated. Lots of animals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals would have nothing to eat. And our fields and pastures would be covered with dung and carrion. These small creatures are within a few inches of our feet, wherever we go on land – but often, theyre disregarded. We would do very well to remember them. Hopefully our governments and corporations will also remember Attenboroughs wise words and ban GMOs and become more creative and proactive about regulating pesticides and fungicides before it is too late. We cannot afford to pollinate our own food sources... we need these insects, especially bees! But my cynical mind thinks that in all likelihood they have already known that there is a correlation between the chemicals they are selling and Beehive collapse, they have probably already started researching how to create a transgenic bee that is resistant to the fungicides and pesticide brew that is killing them. They are probably racing to see who gets to the patent first. If we destroy bees we are sealing our speciess fate, we are doing to ourselves what only an asteroid could do to the dinosaurs! We are committing suicide of the species via extinction of the insects that pollinate our food sources. As a species we are not as evolved as we think we is!
