Quote from The Nations article on why its impossible to indict a cop: An officer’s personal threat assessment is often bolstered by the fact that there are betw 270 million & 310 million guns in USA The logical inference from this statistic is perhaps that its as important to reduce the number of guns licensed to civilians as it is to curb police use of indiscriminate and deadly force. On that note, does police training, for instance, include the staging of a wide variety of potential situations police might encounter, including a review of past situations, and the proposing of alternative scenarios for dealing with them without shooting to kill? Given the fact that shooting a police officer will almost certainly result in a severe prison sentence, possibly life imprisonment or, in some states, the death penalty, a civilian would have to be seriously motivated, or seriously disturbed to shoot a police officer. Surely that fact--about motivation--should be taken into account by police officers in their assessment of the threat level being posed to them.
