Quote of the day: Thus, a predominant feature of European-Indian relations has been the persistent attempts by Western government to forcibly assimilate Indian tribal culture into patterns that conform with accepted European norms of political and social life. Related to these assumptions of the desirability of assimilating the Indian and his culture is the allied ideologically based assumption of the desirability of appropriating Indian resource wealth, whether it be in the form of labor, land, or other goods. Through this exploitive process, white governments hoped to transform the Indian through contact with European materialistic and individualist value structures and to inculcate him with those values. In this way, appropriation as a goal was advanced and supported for its supposed capacity to facilitate the interrelated goal of assimilation. - Robert A Williams Jr., Lumbee
