Quotes When one reads either the bible or the quran you are faced with different passages contradicting eachother. Regardless of interpretation of individual passages, you unavoidibly have to be selective. Cognitive dissonance is therefore inherent to these abrahamic religions. Sure, many messages are unequivocal and not disputed elsewhere within the religion. Still, that does not imply that an individual follower will give credence to them if they contradict ones existing view of the nature of ones own religion. I for one support this cherry picking, when it shifts away from brutality and bigotry. Its more about ignoring passages than interpreting them differently. We humans always seem to strive for some kind of coherence in what we believe, wether it be fictional or not. Not allowing for variation in how you choose to follow a religion is the biggest part of the problem. Gotta stop searching for the true/untrue followers of a religion. There are reasons as to why christianity is less bad today when it was just as brutal in the beginning. Social evolution under ideal conditions. Dont get me wrong, I think the world would be better off without religion too, but we cannot ignore the individual, nor the freedom of religion. Either way, even if religion goes away, we still do not rid ourselves of the logically fallacious thinking and cognitive biases that are the root causes as to why people even believe in such concepts in the first place (assuming that a believer tries to rationalize blind faith). If we dont adress these root causes, something else just takes its place. Many people who do not believe in religion still believe that vaccines cause autism or that anthropogenic climate change is a hoax for whatever reason. There are no real differences in the thought patterns between the religious and these people. ~ Simon Köhlström
