Quotes from the drivers here in Germany Thierry Neuville (3rd) said: “I hope tomorrow will be a good day for us. We struggled a little with the set-up this evening and I lost some confidence in the first stage [SS1] as it was really slippery. Even with just two cars in front of me there was a lot of mud in the corners and you can see from the times that the conditions were getting much trickier further down the field. “Of course it is a shame to lose 12 seconds after just two stages, but this is the game. Our time was OK in the last stage [SS2] and I think our set-up will be better suited to the kinds of roads we will see tomorrow.” Mads Ostberg (6th) said: “We had some difficulties this evening, but the good thing is that we know where we struggled and where we can improve. We changed the set-up of the car dramatically after the first stage [SS1] – making it a lot harder – but it took a while to get used to the handling through the second [SS2]. “The second half of the last stage [SS2] felt a lot better and I think the speed improved too. We need to look at these details more closely to fully understand what was happening, but the splits matched my feeling so I think we will be OK. I think what we learnt today will help us tomorrow. It’s all about understanding simple things like confidence under braking and how to fully attack the corners – that can help us on tomorrow’s stages too.” Nasser Al-Attiyah (7th) said: “The stages were quite fast this evening, but I think we found a good rhythm and I was happy with our speed. Compared to last year when we lost a lot of time, we are a lot closer. The car is working really well for me and I hope we can have another good day tomorrow.” Evgeny Novikov (Rally 2): Evgeny Novikov and co-driver Ilka Minor slid off the road 1.5 kilometres into SS1. Both driver and co-driver were unharmed and the crew will restart under Rally 2 regulations tomorrow. Elfyn Evans (2nd in WRC 2): “This evening hasn’t been too bad, but there were a few challenges to overcome along the way. We struggled a bit getting used to the Tarmac tyre on the first stage [SS1] as it got a bit too hot and over-pressured. But it’s something we’ve learnt and hopefully we can put that right for the rest of the rally. “Things have been getting better and better and the car feels great. Not a bad start by all means, and we’ll look to build on that tomorrow.”
