Quoting Coco Fusco: The NYTimes continues its discursive rampage on Cuba. This is a much more complicated situation than the editorial suggests. It is in fact not clear that the 2013 lifting of the exit visa requirement by the Cuban government allows doctors freedom to travel and many doctors accept work on missions in order to either emigrate or make money in hard currency to send home. The gap between what the government receives and what they are paid is appalling - about the same differential as the one between Walmart profits and their pay to workers. Seems like the NYTimes is selling the notion of cheap medical labor to address global ills as just another form of outsourcing.
