R.I.P Scott Asheton Scott Asheton, the backbeat to three of rock n rolls greatests albums: The Stooges, Funhouse and Raw Power, has passed away over to the weekend due to illness. Like Lou Reed, Scott Asheton was a true original - a pioneer - often copied but never bettered. Australian bands the Scientists and The Birthday Party owed a huge debt to the style of Scott Asheton while J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr took Scotts pummelling approach to drums and applied it to guitar. Henry Rollins was completely awe struck when, on Black Flags first visit to Detroit in the early eighties, Scott Asheton showed up to pay his own respects. In Australia we became aware of Scott and The Stooges via Radio Birdman and in particular via Birdman guitarist and songwriter Deniz Tek who grew up in Michigan, saw The Stooges in the late sixties, and brought their sound to Australia in the early to mid-seventies. Underground rock in Australia started at that point. Scott would later play in The Deniz Tek Group on a tour of Australia. In addition to his drumming prowess Scott Asheton was also the coolest looking dude to ever grace on stage. Yes, that matters. A great drummer, a good friend and a funny guy ... He hit the drums hard enough to shake the whole world. His family, friends, band mates and fans will all miss him dearly. - Deniz Tek Scott joins his brother, guitarist and fellow Stooge Ron Asheton, and original Stooges bassist Dave Alexander in the underground band from hell.
