***R U M İ*** From the sheer standpoint of quantity of production, Mevlana Celalettin Rumi must surely rank very high amosngst the poets of the world. In vievw of so amazing an ootput, it must be a matter for still greater wonder that his poetry olso exhibits a quality of tecnical excellence rarely equalled in the Persian language. He composed with equal ease and fluency in all metres, handling the rarest of them with the greatest mastery. His rymes flow effotlessly and spontaneously, even the most difficult of them to contrive. His style of composition is extremely varied, ranging from almost pure colloquial to highest rhetoric. He is able to use tacnis and tebaq and the other rhetorical figures with complete virtuosity, when he feels so inclined. He is cepable of expressing all moods and all emotion, all situationa and all topics, frome the bradest comedy to the most poignant tragedy. As a cratsman, therefore, Mevlana is without rival. But his tru title to supreme greatness consists first in the pure originality of his poetic genius, and secondly in the profundity of his spiritual teachings. Out of the wide range of his mystical expeiences, especially in connexion with the Mevlevi ritual dancing, Rumi invented a repertory of poetic images unknown to any poet before him. His doctrine, of serene confidence in the love and wisdom of God, realisable here and now in mystical communion, is a precius heritage to all men and all age. Especially do we need it, and turbulent century, which matches so closely in anxiety and disaster the times in which Mevlana himself lived. Prof.Dr.A.J. ARBERRY / 1964 Cambridge University.
