RACISM vs. CLASS BIAS There is much discussion of racism these days, which is good, but I wish there was more understanding of the gray area where racism and class bias overlap. What passes for racism is sometimes class bias, and vice versa. Many of the injustices heaped upon African-Americans are heaped upon lower class whites in equal measure, if not more, and dished out by the same institutions that exploit African-Americans. It’s difficult to make the distinction because a majority of African-Americans are part of the underclass, but those that have risen to middle and upper class status in many cases receive better treatment than lower class whites. Racism and “classism” have much in common. Many Americans are unaware of this because they live in communities where there are few if any lower class whites, but visit rural Alabama or Appalachia and you will see what I mean.
