RAETIHI UPDATE RAETIHI WATER CONTAMINATION Daily Round-up Saturday 5th October 2013 The following major response and recovery activities took place today: 1. Horizons Regional Council flushed the upper Makotuku stream catchment to release diesel trapped in soil and in pools and eddies 2. Ruapehu District Council water contractor Veolia Water flushed out the holding ponds that feed the Raetihi treatment plant and reservoir 3. A laundry service for Raetihi residential laundry has been established. The service will be available from midday Monday. 4. Residents are making use of the shower and water facilities supplied. Eight drive-up showers are now operational in Raetihi at the Downer Works plant at the corner of SH4 & George St. Major objectives for tomorrow are: 1. Veolia Water is to scour the Raetihi water reservoir up to the Makotuku stream 2. Door to door water delivery service established by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Response responsibilities Ruapehu District Council (RDC) – is lead agency for the event as it is a public health issue in Raetihi Horizons Regional Council – is lead agency for containment and clean-up and acting in support role for RDC DoC – is lead agency for any issues affecting the National Park Iwi – is working alongside all agencies Raethi office hours The RDC Raetihi office will be open tomorrow Sunday 6th – 9.00am – 3.00pm • After hours call 06 385 4447 Where you can get water Please note the water tankers will be operating over the weekend: 7am - 7pm, Saturday and Sunday. • There is no shortage of drinking water. • Potable water is available from tanker situated outside the Seddon St mini-mart • Tanker truck hours are 7.00am - 7.00pm • If you need water delivered call at the Raetihi Council office on Seddon St or ph: 06 385 4447 • 1,100 litre water tanks are located at (see maps in table below); o 112 Seddon St o Raetihi Primary School o Alexandra St o Cnr Mt View & Balance St o Cnr Grey & Duncan St o Cnr George & Islington St o Cnr Ranfurly & Ward St Toilets • The Raetihi sewerage system is still operational. • The Raetihi water system has not been turned on to allow flushing of toilets as the contaminated water poses a health risk and may cause damage to residential plumbing. • You can still flush your toilet using tanker or another water source. 22 portaloos have been positioned around Raetihi at the following locations (see table below for map): • SH4 Parapara 2 at Caltex • Seddon St 1 at Baptist Church • 2 on corner with Ward St • 2 outside restrooms • 2 outside pensioner flats • 2 on corner with Ameku St • Pitt St 2 outside Rugby Club Gym • Grey St 3 outside Raetihi Primary School • 2 corner with Islington St Showers • There is a shuttle service for anyone wanting showers. • Please call Dempsey Buses 06 385 4022 • Hours: 8.00am – 7.00pm • Note: Different showers are available at different times so you may be put on a roster for pick-up. Bring your own towels, soap etc. • Alternatively drive-up showers are available at Ruapehu College Gym from 7.00am - 7.00pm • Disabled people, and anyone needing mobility assistance should contact Raetihi administration office on 06 385 4447, for arrangements. • Council has established the first eight portable showers on top of local facilities.These are located at the corner of SH4 and George St. These are now open. Bring your own towels and soap, etc. These are drive-up facilities. There may be a short wait - please be patient. • A further 28 showers should be up and running by Monday. Laundry service • A commercial laundry service for Raetihi domestic laundry has been organised • Service will be available from midday Monday • NOTE: Location of pick up and drop off for laundry bags will be advised before Monday morning. • Turn-around is expected to be no longer than 48 hours. • Laundry will be washed and dried but not folded • Council takes no responsibility for any shrinkage or damage to clothing. • Laundry bags hold 15kg - families are asked to use as few as possible. Water containers There are water containers available from the tanker on Seddon St. Assistance required If you need assistance with anything call Council on 385 4447 or call at the Raetihi Council office on Seddon St. Rural community can also call the Rural Support Trust 0800 787 254 Ohakune Ohakune is not affected by this issue. People on the Ohakune water supply do not need to take any precautionary actions.
