RAIN IN THE DESERT As I often say to my friends and colleagues - TopicsExpress

RAIN IN THE DESERT As I often say to my friends and colleagues here in the Permian Basin of Texas, this is the weather I deliberately moved AWAY from! Steady rain has dominated the West Texas weather for a whole week now, and I am descending into the seasonal affective disorder I knew so well in Massachusetts. That cabin fever was lead by the month of April 1967, which was a solid month of solid white skies and steady drizzle. In those days, I would joke, Well, is there a threat of sunshine today? My visits to Scotland and England showed me that New England is Olde England in microcosm as far as the weather goes, because both of those regions of the UK are forever moist. Why do you think a line of clothing is called London Fog? But, Im the exception in this part of Texas. Here, rain is LOVED! It is a rare event. Snow is even less known than rain (thank you, beneficent God). People here look forward to rain as much as I look forward to sunshine. Most of the time, water use restrictions are in effect, and lawns turn so brown that an increasing number of homeowners are opting for xeroscaping, or grassless lawns made more of desert-like sand. A house near where I live is scaped with pure white sand and hardy yucca trees (definitely something I would do if I ever own a home, because, unlike my mother, I am not a lawn mower. Im not even a rake.). So, we in Midland-Odessa are now within those 35 days we talk about when we say that this region has 330 days of sunshine. Please, skies, open up to your normally cloudless blue. Im going through solar withdrawal!
