As if sending a message, Rain or Shine pulled this feat against Alaska Wednesday night to complete a clean sweep of their head-on duels in PBA Season 39 – unless they face each other in the playoffs. It’s three-of-three for the Elasto Painters over the Aces capped by the latter’s masterful and cruel 123-72 win over the latter in the PLDT Home Telpad PBA Governors’ Cup at the PhilSports Arena. Arizona Reid and his teammates raced away on a 19-0 attack in the second quarter and refused to slow it down, notching a second straight win to finally hit the .500 mark in the season-ending tourney with a 3-3 win-loss slate. The E-Painters were businesslike all throughout, handing the Aces the ghastly rout that further brought them down the chart at 2-4. The 51-point massacre was the most lopsided game in the league since Shell dumped Tanduay, 154-100, on Nov. 16, 1986. In this particular conference, the Elasto Painters themselves scored the previous biggest rout – a 119-97 spanking of the GlobalPort Batang Pier last May 25. “It’s one of those days when everything you do is right and everything your opponent does is wrong,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. “I don’t think it’s their character. So impressive were the E-Painters that they seemed to be always a step ahead of the Aces. “We were running our plays and we were running our execution well. We fed off on our defense at yung momentum nagtuloy-tuloy,” said Guiao. Reid was a big catalyst, firing away five three-pointers and a total of 48 points even as he sat out the last five minutes of the game. Henry Walker got a longer rest as Alaska coach Alex Compton opted to preserve his energy for their next game against San Mig Coffee on Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome. Reid buckled down to work early, pouring in 27 points as against Walker’s 12 as the E-Painters rampaged to a 60-43 halftime lead. The efficient RoS import himself led the swashbuckling 19-to-nothing run that gave the E-Painters a 54-30 bubble with three minutes to go in the first half. Rain or Shine left Alaska beaten black and blue as the E-Painters never relented till the final buzzer.
