RAIN, SNOW AND WIND IMPACTS THROUGH MONDAY, MARCH 17TH Today - TopicsExpress

RAIN, SNOW AND WIND IMPACTS THROUGH MONDAY, MARCH 17TH Today begins a streak of active weather across the Northern Rockies. Impacts of a varying nature will last through Tuesday morning, and are listed as follows: TODAY: Mountain snow will continue in higher terrain, and mountain passes will become slick with periods of low visibility. Lolo, Lookout, and Marias Passes will be most affected by snowfall through Saturday. In addition, a second band of quick-moving snow will follow the initial front, and bring about a period of graupel or a burst of heavier snowfall this afternoon and evening down to valley floors. High resolution model guidance show the band developing in western Montana around 6 PM. SUNDAY: While the day is expected to be free from precipitation (except for northwest Montana where rain and snow will begin Sunday morning), western Montana will experience gusty winds, which will increase and reach their peak in the late afternoon/early evening hours. West-southwest wind speeds up to 25 mph are possible, with gusts as high as 35 to 40 mph. The strongest winds will occur along the Continental Divide, and along the I-90 corridor (especially from Missoula east through Butte). This could impact high profile vehicles traveling on the interstate. Locations with these winds are also expected to have a very warm day. MONDAY: Heavier precipitation will spread across all of central Idaho and western Montana, with the Clearwaters of Idaho and western Montana receiving the brunt of this particular storm. Confidence is still moderate at this time (but is growing with each passing day) that mountains and valleys could see snow during this time frame. Snow is likely over all area mountain passes and grades, while a mix of rain...changing to a rain/graupel/snow mix, then finally over to all snow by Monday evening. Impacts include potentially hazardous travel over mountain passes due to snow and blowing snow, while valleys will experience increasing chances for snow accumulations and rapidly-changing road conditions, which could impact travel.
