RAKHUDU URGES STUDENT LEADERS TO UNLEASH POTENTIAL The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr. Keletso Rakhudu says the ministry recognises the pivotal role played by Botswana tertiary institutions in addressing societal challenges. Speaking during a national conference on student leadership in Gaborone on October 3, Mr. Rakhudu said the ministry could not tackle students challenges alone therefore the stakeholders being student leaders were valuable partners going forward. “We need your participation in ensuring that students are taken care of and are assisted throughout their stay in schools,” he said. The assistant minister also appreciated the efforts of BA ISAGO University College, as a stakeholder in the education sector, saying the partnership was exactly what they needed to realise the nation’s Vision 2016, particularly of ‘an educated and informed nation’. He added that the conference would close gap in the educational system and address the part that has been dormant for long. The conference was organised by Ba ISAGO University College in partnership with Class volunteers under the theme “identifying student leadership as critical component of the higher education transformation agenda”. The conference targeted the students’ leaders in tertiary schools and the main aim was to identify the challenges they face at tertiary level. The president of BA ISAGO Dr. Roshen Kishun said the conference was designed to explore the question of whether they were doing enough to nurture the students of Botswana. He said the conference gave a platform where they could together as a channel see whether they were doing enough to nurture student leadership potential. He said the leadership of the future should necessarily shift its focus to human resources development strategies other than mining commodities like diamonds. He said students’ leaders needed to be informed that transformation was needed to ensure that human resource strategies succeeds to the development of the economy. “Students are responsible for the paramount shift that shapes the world therefore their leadership must be recognized and lifted,” he said. Giving a presentation about positioning students in the education sector and the economy, managing director of Innolead Consulting and X-Pert Group, Mr. Oabona Kgengwenyane said student leadership was an integral part in the students’ success after tertiary. He said country leaders all over the world must create enough room for young patrons to unleash their talents. “Students should discuss and explore their ideas without fear of intimidation,” he said. He encouraged them not to depend on government system but rather develop entrepreneurial ideas which would develop the economy. Student leaders from different tertiary schools in Botswana were also given a chance to respond to the speakers and discuss burning issues. Among the dignitaries during the conference was the former minister of education and Class Volunteers patron, Dr. Gaositwe Chiepe. (BOPA)
