RAND WATER AND BIRDLIFE SOUTH AFRICA UNDERTAKE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE VAAL Rand Water’s environmental brand Water Wise and BirdLife South Africa have collaborated to initiate an educational drive aimed at creating awareness on the importance of wetlands and water, the surrounding ecosystems as well as birds. This forms part of a partnership with BirdLife South Africa where Rand Water and Eskom have co-sponsored the first ever Flufftail Festival scheduled to be launched from 2-6 February 2015 during Wetlands week at the Checkers Forecourt at Sandton City. The educational activities rolled out at four schools in Sebokeng township. These include Itokisetse Primary School, Bulatsela Primary School, Itsebeng Primary School and Montsosi Lower Primary School. In addition, members of the Phaphamang Organisation were also trained and participated in the programme. The programme included how to identify alien invasive plants, what types of birds could be expected in wetlands and played some games and activities that simplified their understand of wetlands. There was a clean-up of the adjacent wetland where the learners and community members could put their knowledge into practice. Rand Water plans to revisit the same schools in February and March 2015 and interact with the learners who should be in Grade Six again theming the Flufftail Festival and Water Week respectively with school curriculum and water conservation.
