RANDOM THOUGHTS on a Saturday morning................ Lawd, whoda thought that a simple song called HAPPY could cause such controversy? This issue of secular music in church is nothing new, although we may be seeing it in a way that weve never seen before, but then at age 62, Im seeing a lot of stuff in church that Ive never seen before. hep Lawd! Back in the day, it was the musicians that would borrow little riffs and runs from secular artists and use them at various times during the service. We got a kick out of it and of course it was the talk after service. Church weddings have always included secular music, sometimes making some adjustments to the words so they could get permission to sing it in the sanctuary. What were seeing today is a trend thats growing as younger pastors are leaving the traditions and thinking of the pioneers and having a greater appeal to younger worshippers who share their thinking, that its pretty much okay to do just about whatever in church. Churches are no longer the sanctuaries of old. They are multi purpose buildings to be used for a variety of purposes. Theyre doing the electric slide in the fellowship halls and using Hip Hop & Rap to make the worship service more appealing to young people. IS IT WRONG? Only God can judge. Its definitely different and the ones who struggle with these changes are those who love church as we have always known it. Youtube makes it so easy to see whats going on in many of our churches across the nation. Many times I delete the Facebook posts because of the commentary which goes beyond self righteous. Its down right vicious. Now to all of those who object to the saints dancing to it in the sanctuary, if it were incorporated into a childrens production or drama, youd applaud the leaders for their creativity. :-)
