RANT OF THE DAY: All of these Common Core status shares make me mad every time I see them. All Common Core is is a set of standards that a teacher must teach. Teachers have always had standards they must teach, its just now we use the Common Core standards so students across the US and world are getting taught the same thing. HOW those standards are taught is not mandated by Common Core. HOW the standards are taught is decided upon by the district, school, or teacher. The worksheets and FB posts about Common Core are really about a strategy to teach math called Singapore Math. Singapore math is just a different way to teach kids math and to get them to think about how they got to their answers and visualize how they got to their answer. There is more than one way to skin a cat, just like their is more than one way to solve a math problem. Times change and so do strategies. The this is not how I learned how to do it, what is wrong with the old way is not helping your kids. Walt Disney said We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because were curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. If we always did things the old way we could never move forward. We would see our competition fly past us. The world is a very competitive place and we have to stay innovative to stay ahead of the competition. Would you rather us to things the old way and have the competition fly past your kids or would you rather us be innovative and your kid be the one flying past everyone else?!
