RASFF ALERT, AUGUST 27, 2014 - CADMIUM IN FROZEN HORSE MEAT FROM ROMANIA. While everyones familiar with bute recalls in horsemeat, Cadmium can be just as deadly and is considered carcinogenic. Here is a RASFF ALERT for bute in Irish horsemeat https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/rasff-window/portal/?event=notificationDetail&NOTIF_REFERENCE=2014.0576. While this recall is not from Canadian horsemeat, to better understand Cadmium and why it is found on earth, here is a quote directly from Environment Canada Cadmium (Cd) is present in the Canadian environment as a result of both natural processes (including forest fires, volcanic emissions and weathering of soil, till, and bedrock) and human activities. Of the natural sources of cadmium to the environment, weathering and erosion of cadmium-bearing rocks represent perhaps the most important source. Anthropogenic sources of cadmium entry to the Canadian environment include metal production (particularly base metal smelting and refining), stationary fuel combustion (power generation and heating), transportation, solid waste disposal, and sewage sludge application.
