RATIONALE BEHIND OGUN’S BRAND NEW METRO TAXIS EXPLAINED Ogun State Government says its choice of purchasing brand new cars for its metro taxis scheme launched few days ago is to ensure durability and sustenance with a view to making the programme outlive the current administration. The Special Assistant to the State Governor on Transport Administration,Mr. Babatunde Odejimi dropped this hint in Abeokuta while fielding questions from newsmen. Odejimi explained that the brand new fully air-conditionedtaxis would ensure that operators and passenger had values for their money, saying most of the ‘tokunbo’ cars had been over used and are not fit for profitable commercial use. He noted the choice of tokunbo car led to untimely disruption of such scheme in the past, saying that the metro taxis would be effectively maintained through continuous servicing. The Governor’s aide affirmed that government would continue to empower allotees and simplify the repayment procedure of the metro taxis to solve the seemingly intractable perennial transportation problems being faced by the people of the state. Also speaking, the Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Akeem Adeosun and his Road Employer Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) counterpart, Alhaji Mugidisu Akinpelu, said their unions were proud to identify with the laudable gesture of the Government towards improving transportation system in the State. The union bosses gave the thumbs up for Governor Amosun over the initiative, noting that the mass transit and taxis scheme would change the face of transportation in the State. They urged beneficiaries to reciprocate government’s gesture through prompt repayment, advising both passengers and drivers to adhere strictly to guiding rules as enunciated by the State Governor during the launch. #Ilarogossip
