RAV4 Top Safety Pick, But Earns Poor Rating in IIHS Small Overlap Front Crash Testing The 2013 Toyota RAV4 earned Top Safety Pick awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for tests including moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear. However, for the latest IIHS small overlap front crash testing, which evaluates a vehicle’s performance at 40 miles per hour when 25 per cent of a vehicle’s front end on the driver side strikes a five-foot-tall rigid barrier, the RAV4 earned a poor performance rating. It is not unusual for vehicles to be put through Insurance Institute testing after they have been launched in the market as these tests are not part of the government-mandated safety standards required for vehicles sold in the US or Canada. As always, Toyota strives to build vehicles of the highest quality and safety. We are pleased that the RAV4 remains an IIHS Top Safety Pick and that Toyota has a total of 21 Toyota, Lexus and Scion models named 2013 IIHS “Top Safety Picks”, more than any other automaker. Eleven other automakers’ small SUVs are rated marginal or poor in the small overlap test.
