RCMP making headway in recent vandalism: four arrested with more arrests expected to come. The recent open letter to the community from the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP has generated much discussion in Spruce Grove about the recent vandalism that has occurred in the city. City Council, along with the RCMP, would like to ensure residents that they take this seriously and headway is being made. “We have allocated extra patrols and there are police officers dedicated specifically to monitoring activities in a hope to either deter or arrest the people committing these offences,” said RCMP Insp. Gary Graham. This week, four males were arrested in connection with some of the offences and more arrests are expected to come. “Spruce Grove is a safe and caring community and it is disappointing that a very small minority, literally a handful of people, are having such a negative impact on us,” added Spruce Grove Mayor Stuart Houston. People in the community have suggested that a curfew may be an effective way to deal with the issue. “We’re not considering a curfew,” responded Mayor Houston. “The majority of the youth in this community are well-behaved and upstanding citizens, it’s not fair to restrict them when a very small group is responsible for these offences.” The community is asked to be aware of what is happening in their neighbourhoods and to make sure to report any acts of vandalism to the RCMP at 780-962-2222.
