RE. Jazz Fests ..It is surprising to me how many people use the logic of If they did not bring in the big pop, rap, rock etc, stars they would not be able to pay for the jazz acts . That is NOT how it works. First of all, the amount of money these people demand are about ten or twenty times the amount of the biggest jazz names. The money comes from corporate funding, who are paying for advertising. We are talking about profit. Corporations are now , in most cases calling the shots as to who the headliners will be. The few festival coordinators still left who actually care about the music are in a bind. If a jazz festival has someone like Snoop Dogg as their main attraction , you will fill seats with people who like Snoop Dogg. Period. These people do not give a shit about the jazz part of it. You are NOT exposing anyone to jazz. Since government will not fund jazz or blues festivals it has become the arena for corporate advertising. It is now all about filling seats, by any means possible. At one time , before corporations took the reins, jazz festivals had jazz. How did they pay for it then ?
