RE SHADE: -----Original Message----- From: Tcourt5096 To: TCourt5096 dacollin ; wildhorse ; nkornze ; wpacelle Sent: Fri, Sep 19, 2014 3:07 pm Subject: Reply by BLM : Shade trial and SOP / WY fatalities Dear Debbie, BLM, Thank you for your reply re shade trial and sending photos. The cloth tarps for Shade Research PVC seem small and pose moving objects in the wind - the flopping of cloth which may spook the horses, therefore them not utilizing the shade. Photos PVC Shade Research 1, 2 , 3 One such cloth tarp photo I saw by LL was already torn from the hot sun/UV light or wind. The instability to uphold weather demands by this type of material may be a concern as to the inefficiency to the trial or study thereof, and/or lack of horses utilizing a moving object rather than them comfortably using a highly installed solid roof structure such as PVC has over hay or the Ridgecrest facility has a solid canopy. Will BLM consider putting up such solid structures, serving the needs of all horses ? Since we all know that wild horses in open environments can and do freely seek out shade / shelter in riparian areas, rock formations and under tree growth - it seems they will do the same in captivity if structures resemble a natural and non-threatening layout, thus inviting them to utilize it. Also, the triangle shade roofs on metal posts at Fallon are solidly built, yet their small size does not seem to cast sufficient shade onto the pen in question unless the horse in said pen would sit on the rail. What is the purpose of these triangles ? What is behind those ply wood panels ? Could you send photos from a different angle, showing if any shade can result by those structures at any given time of daylight ? Their solid style is appealing and seems workable, yet the small size appears to not meet the needs of horses - due to lack of sufficient casting of shade. Photos Fallon Triangle 1,2,3. The same concern goes to the compromised pens - the solid structure seems appropriate, yet too small to be of use ? The one in photo compromised pen3 trough is solely geared to cover the trough from heat ? Wouldnt all the horses benefit from cooler water resulting in a consistent covering of all water troughs present at PVC ? I believe so. Photos compromised pen, 2, 3trough. Last, but not least, thank you for sending the link to the Memo. You write: The Wyoming gathers will be conducted according to the Animal Welfare Standards for gathers that are outlined in Instruction Memo 2013-059. A revised set of standards that UC Davis assisted BLM to develop will be implemented when new helicopter gather contracts are issued in about six months. The below reports on the most recent fatalities in the WY round up are disheartening once again, completely avoidable and unnecessary - foals dying because of a round up and being trampled to death in a pen/trailer. It does not reflect the wordage of the Memo Debbie ! These incidents must not be happening - it demonstrates again that round ups are not humane and fatalities as such would not occur if BLM could find humane alternatives on the range - for which we have been asking so long. It is beyond tragic that more young horses lost their lives in methods so opposed by the American public - please Ed Roberson, Neil Kornze, consider humane alternatives on the range ! There must be better ways ! We, the American public, treasure each and every horse that is wild and free - and we care for immediate reform that is humane and reflects the promises of the Advisory Board meetings. Please relay this notation to the leadership, once again - we really hope you listen. Thanks for any updates and if you can send more photos from Fallon explaining the purpose of above triangles, please do so. Thank you. Have a nice weekend. Monika Courtney
