READ THE WHOLE FOR A CHANGE IN THINKING. I accompanied my kids to a birthday party at a newly opened three-star hotel in the city recently. Giant speakers taller than the birthday boy belted out the latest hits from Hindi movies. Girls as young as six heaved their non-existent bosoms to the ‘poetry of ‘Fevicol Se’, while boys executed neat pelvic thrusts. An ‘event manager’ in a miniskirt was shrieking into a microphone every two minutes, ‘boys and girrrrls, are you having fuuuuuuun’? Buffet tables were laden with healthy, nutritious snacks like izza, chips, burgers, doughnuts and instant noodles. A depressed looking Mickey Mouse shuffled around listlessly, hot and sticky inside his costume that smelled of sour milk and stale sweat. Dark, sticky puddles of spilt coke were all over the floor. Mountains of disposable plastic plates teetered perilously, full of half-eaten snacks. It was a depressing scene, but one that I had witnessed several times before! A birthday is an exciting occasion for a child. It is natural that a child would want to celebrate his/her birthday in the company of friends. However, rather than throwing the same conventional birthday party year after year, parents can celebrate their child’s birthday in so many more creative ways.
