READING COLLOQUIUM: WINTER 2014 HST 405M/505M Multiethnicity in Imperial and Soviet Russia W 0900-1150 Prof. Hsu Since the 18th century, what we know as “Russia” has existed as a political unit incorporating a very large number of ethnicities, ranging from Slavic, Muslim, to Asian and the indigenous groups of the North. Contrary to the US and European experiences that are more familiar to us, the incorporation into either the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union of these ethnicities only intermittently, rather than persistently, involved policies of assimilation. This course studies how Russia managed to remain one political unit for as long as it did (and still does)—in spite of its immense ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity—by investigating inter-ethnic politics and social relations, as well as mutual perceptions of (ethnic) Russians and non-Russians. Prerequisite: HST 300 or consent of the instructor.
