REALITY CHECK REALITY CHECK Life is dangerous and unpredictable. There is just one choice: TRUST ... in God. This is a particularly difficult choice since most of us suffer greatly at some point. Theres no Ozzie and Harriet IRL. I once swam, early in the AM, off a beach at the Caravanserai Hotel on St. Maarten. I was treading water; my friend was on a blanket on the beach. Beside me, an underwave went past, big, strong, close. A living thing. Dolphin? I think not, they swim in groups and I would have seen at least one. Warm water, early morning, only one thing that could have been. I carefully negotiated my way, treading water and not kicking, to shore. By the time I got there, i literally crawled out on my hands and knees because the adrenaline had rendered my legs totally useless. THIS IS LIFE. Under the current we know not what lurks and we are, usually, without defense. Love one another. From my new chapbook, The Water Has Teeth: The water has teeth. Close your eyes at any ocean’s edge and hear the lullaby, constant, endless. One small step at a time, go forward and feel the strong pull at your feet, away, away from shore. Is this temptation, invitation, or calamity? See the sun drop like a red ball feel the sting of salt on any small open wound. The water is life. Warfare. It is a cradle. Tomb. The ocean swallows us whole as it pleases. Wrap yourself in it forgive yourself in it offer yourself in it and there, with you, unseen as in all of life, is the perfect master of tides who may swim past you without a glance, or whose wave -shadow may touch you as it passes.
