RECITING SOORAT AL-KAHF DURING THE DAY OR NIGHT FRIDAY. The illustrious Imams, al-Haakim (2/399) and al-Bayhaqi (3/249) narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, that the Prophet (sallallaah alayhi wasallaam) said, “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.” Ibn Hajar said in Takhreej al-Adhkaar that this is a hasan hadeeth. In another version narrated by al-Daarimi (3407) as a statement of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri who said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).” This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6471. The eminent Imam AbdulAzeez bin Baaz was asked, ‘Is reading Soorat al-Kahf on Friday or the night before a recommended action?’ He responded, ‘Praise be to Allaah. There are marfoo’ ahaadeeth concerning that which support one another and indicate that it is prescribed to read Soorat al-Kahf on Friday. That was proven to be narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri and the isnaads stop with him. In an issue like this, it cannot be deemed to be his personal opinion; rather he must have learned it from the Prophet (blessing s and peace of Allaah be upon him). Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn Baaz (25/196) Al-Mannaawi said: Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in his Amaali: “In some reports it says ‘the day of Jumu’ah’ and in some reports it says ‘the night of Jumu’ah’. They may be reconciled by saying that what is meant is the day which includes the night and vice versa.” (Fayd al-Qadeer ,6/199) Al-Mannaawi also said: “It is recommended to read it during the day or night of Jumu’ah, as al-Shaafai (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated.” ( Fayd al-Qadeer , 6/198). Shaykh Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Abdillaah at-Tuwaijiree (Al-Fiqh al-Islamee fi dawh Quran wa Sunnah 1/525): It is Sunnah to recite Suratul Kahf during the night or day of Friday. Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid explained that “The soorah may be read during the night or the day of Jumu’ah. The night of Jumu’ah starts from sunset on Thursday, and the day of Jumu’ah ends at sunset. Therefore the time for reading this soorah extends from sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday.” There is a scholarly opinion that it is a limited to the day- from dawn to sunset. However, the availability of an authentic hadeeth to the contrary will nullify this position. May Allaah have mercy on our scholars and preserve the living on piety, they taught us to follow evidences. Thinking aloud, I used to reason that the rewards of the two periods are different. Please consider the wordings of the two versions. Perfect knowledge belongs to Allaah and may He exalt the mention of His Messenger among the High Angels.
