We encourage anyone who feels strongly about the importance of this to email the Council of Europe whose email address is at the base of the letter. After many years of campaigning by real patriots, our language was recognised. Now we need recognition for its original speakers! Recognition of the Cornish will reveal untold benefits to us all. Yn lel Convener KBCL Department for Communities and Local Government – 10.03.2014 Department for Communities and Local Government 10 March 2014 Dear Convener Thank you for your letter of 6 February to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government about the Cornish and the Framework Convention for the Protection of national Minorities. It has been passed to me to reply. As you may know, the UK has recocognised the Cornish language under the Council of Europe’s Charter for regional Minority Languages. Since 2005, this Department has provided funding to support the local partnership, which works with Cornwall Council, schools and other bodies to promote knowledge and use of the language. The Government continues to consider arguments for inclusion of the Cornish under the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. The Government is due to make its next report to the Council of Europe under the Framework Convention in the spring. This Department is coordinating that work and we note the contents of the portfolio sent to us by the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League. We will send a draft version of the report out for information and comment to a wide range of non-governmental organisations.
