RECOMMENDED BOOKS (from 2014) and an OLD ONE. [1] “All The Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. The novel trails two characters whose paths cross in World War IIs last days—an orphaned engineering prodigy recruited into the Nazi ranks, and a blind French girl who joins the Resistance. The plot isnt new yet the telling is undoubtedly fresh. [2] “Family Life” by Akhil Sharma. An elder son of a family that immigrates from India to Queens suffers severe brain damage in a swimming pool accident. Love, grief, mourning and family told and effected the way we havent felt. [3] “The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History” by Elizabeth Kolbert. As critic Michael S. Roth puts it, “Humans change the world more than other species do, and now the most urgent question is whether they can take responsibility for what they do.” [4] “Thirteen Days in September: Carter, Begin, and Sadat at Camp David” by Lawrence Wright. In 1978, over 13 days at Camp David, Anwar Sadat, Menachem Begin and Jimmy Carter hammered out a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt that remains the most profound diplomatic achievement to emerge from the Mideast conflict. A must reading, especially for the young or those who failed to know or indifferent to understand. [5] “Future Shock” (1970) by Alvin Toffler. Toffler defines the term future shock as a certain psychological state of individuals and entire societies. His shortest definition for the term is a personal perception of too much change in too short a period of time.” Makes sense?
