RECOMMENDED: Capote (Bennett Miller 2005) Based on the biography of Truman Capote by Gerald Clarke, Capote was the directorial debut of Bennett Miller and the film that would earn Philip Seymour Hoffman his Academy Award for best Actor. In 1959, novelist Truman Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) read a newspaper article about a multiple murder in a small Kansas town. The story intrigues him and he decides to travel to Kansas to cover the story, accompanied by his friend and fellow novelist Harper Lee (Catherine Keener). With his effeminate demeanor Capote stands out like a sore thumb in the small country community but he nonetheless manages to gain the trust of Alvin Dewey (Chris Cooper), the agent in charge of the murder investigation. Capote also meets the two killers in jail and starts forming a bond with one of them as he awaits execution on death row. The magazine piece hes meaning to write eventually turns into his most celebrated true crime novel, In Cold Blood, and as we follow this process, the movie brilliantly paints a picture of the author Capote himself. With stunning attention to period detail and a fantastic cast, lead by a towering performance by Hoffman, Capote was a truly impressive feature film debut by director Bennett Miller whos working a script by first-time screenwriter Dan Futterman. Apart from the Oscar, Hoffman took home a slate of Best Actor awards (including the BAFTA and Golden Globe) and the film, Bennett, Keener and Futterman were all nominated for both Academy Awards and BAFTAs for their contributions as well. youtube/watch?v=D_c-vPB1nxc
