RED CROSS PARTNERS WITH GEORGIA’S FIRST LADY, GEORGIA NATIONAL GUARD AND ATLANTA FALCONS TO KICK-OFF HOLIDAY MAIL FOR HEROES CAMPAIGN Georgians Urged to Send Messages of Thanks to U.S. Service Members Now Through December 12th ATLANTA, November 7, 2014 – Though many Georgia families will celebrate with loved ones during the holiday season, some will be missing family members who are convalescing in VA facilities, training at military installations statewide and serving our country overseas. The Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a way for the public to send words of inspiration, thanks and encouragement to our military heroes and members of Georgia’s First Lady will help lead the way. On Tuesday, November 11th at 9:30 a.m. at Atlanta Red Cross headquarters (1955 Monroe Dr. NE), Georgia’s First Lady, Sandra Deal, will join Brigadier General Joe Jarrard, Assistant Adjutant General, Georgia Department of Defense, members of the Atlanta Falcons, Tiffany Circle members, which is a society of philanthropic women leaders in support of the American Red Cross, and guests for the official kick-off of the Red Cross 2014 Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign in Georgia. Ms. Deal will encourage the public to join her in sending holiday messages of gratitude to service members and veterans on military installations and facilities throughout Georgia. “This marks the eighth year of the Red Cross national Holiday Mail for Heroes program and our goal is to raise its profile and broaden its reach,” said Terri Badour Duckett, CEO of Georgia’s Red Cross. “We’re inviting all Georgians to give something that truly means something by sharing their appreciation for our military families with words of holiday cheer sent through the Red Cross.” Since 2006, with the help of the public, the American Red Cross has distributed more than 6 million cards to members of the Armed Forces during the holiday season. All holiday cards mailed by the public are screened, sorted and distributed to military members, veterans and their families through military installations and military serving outlets. * Holiday cards should be addressed to “Dear Service Member, Veteran, or Military Family” because those cards can be shared with anyone in the military community. * Avoid buying or making cards with glitter – glitter can actually aggravate health issues for the wounded or ill. * Items like letters, photos or gift cards won’t make it through the screening and sorting process – please don’t send anything but the card itself. * If you want to send a large quantity of cards, skip the individual envelopes and place your cards in a big mailing envelope or flat-rate postal shipping box. * To ensure cards are delivered in time for the holidays, they must be postmarked no later than Friday, December 12 th, 2014. * Mail Cards (postage required) to: Holiday Mail for Heroes P.O. Box 13669 Atlanta, GA 30324 * The public is invited to share photos and videos of card signing efforts or send holiday greetings for troops by using the hashtag #HolidayMail on your Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and Vine accounts. If you wish, connect with fellow card senders through Facebook/redcross and Twitter/redcross using #holidaymail. * For a full list of program guidelines, visit redcross.org/holidaymail
