RED DEVIL! South African Railways 1,067mm (3ft 6ins) gauge Class 26 4-8-4 - popularly known as the Red Devil - was rebuilt in 1981 from a Class 25NC locomotive (originally constructed in 1953) by mechanical engineer David Wardale from the UK on the principles developed by Argentinian mechanical engineer L.D. Porta, to improve fuel combustion and steaming rate. On rebuilding its maximum recorded power output was 3,350 kW (4,490 hp) at 75.5 km/h (46.9 mph). Pretty impressive for a narrow gauge loco!
